Tanzania

Here is the mythical Africa of safari lore: thousand-strong herds of zebra and wildebeest sweep north towards Kenya’s Maasai Mara in an annual mass migration across the Serengeti or “endless plain.” This sunburnt savannah where lions sleep in acacias and hippos wallow in watering holes is also home to giraffes, leopards, antelopes and all the other animals our imagination associates with the African wild. The same country includes the blue expanse of the Great Lakes in the West; Lake Manyara’s lush tropical forests; the enormous green bowl of Ngorongoro Crater, “cradle of mankind” and home to an astonishingly rich animal population; shining Kilimanjaro in the Northeast; and the jewel-like spice islands of Zanzibar. We offer some suggestions for discovering Tanzania in depth without renouncing comfort and refinement.
